The Johnston additional-name
Henry Dunlop of Craigton and Alexina Rankin named their youngest son Alexander Johnstone Dunlop.
Alexina's maternal grandmother was Jean Johnston who had married Alexander McLarty (MacLaverty).
They went on to have at least 8 children. The oldest - Colin became an influencial doctor in Jamaica and encouraged others in his family to come out there. Their youngest son was named Archibald Johnston McLarty and died aged 17 shortly after arriving in Jamaica. Their daughter Elizabeth married John Rankin and this couple had a daughter - Alexina Rankin who went on to marry Henry Dunlop of Craigton. Alexina's older brother was named Alexander Johnston McLarty.
Alexander Johnstone Dunlop may have been so named as a memorial to Alexina's brother. He was named with the final "e" in the registers of birth and baptism and used that spelling throughout his life. He married another descendent of Jean Johnston - Constance Susan Mary Myers (her great great grandaughter). Their children were named Henry Johnston Dunlop and Alexina Johnston Dunlop. AJ's brother Henry's, son also carried the name - Alexander Rankin Johnston Dunlop.
Interestingly HJ also married a great great granddaughter of Jean Johnston - Constance Susan Mary Myers. Their son was always called Bruce Alexander Johnstone Dunlop as was his son always called Alastair Henry Johnstone Dunlop.
It seems to be an example of the of the evolution of names.
