INTRODUCTION

I embarked upon writing this site as I was aware three elements which I felt deserved memorialising:

Having produced a first draft I felt that I could add my own story as I have lived through experiences some may feel were worthy of mention (password required).

I have tried to ensure that there is documentary evidence to support what I report. I have included aspects of my father’s life which he recounted to me personally and my own story includes items of similarly personal memories.

In researching this family I discovered links to many other people who were notable enough for a hyperlink. Some of these can be found here.

Two pieces of detailed information came from letters written by Kitty Richardson (a descendent of Charles Dunlop of Carlebar, brother of Henry of Craigton) to a descendent of the James Dunlop who emigrated to New Zealand. Kitty Richardson appears to have been an archaeologist and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Rebecca Green sent me copies of two of her letters from 1987.

Similarly Rebecca Green had photographed pages from the Dunlop Family Book apparently produced by Janette Mary Fernie Ranken Thesiger who was the granddaughter of James 1762's  eldest son James with Margaret Tennant. Its last entry appears to be 1932 though it has been annotated as late as 1944. Rebecca Green's research is catalogued in a family tree which can be accessed at ancestry.co.uk but needs a paid-for account.

There is another family tree which appears to have been produced by Henry Johnston Dunlop, father of Bruce Alexander Johnstone, William Bruce and Constance Helen Jean. He had access to Dunlop, Shand, Myers, Spalding and Rankin relatives.

We have also inherited a box of "Daguerreotypes". My attempts to link them to individuals can be found here.

Jane Freeman carried out much detailed and well catalogued research which I referred to constantly.
