He was told that he had a loose cartilage, it continued to give him trouble occasionally until April 1916 (he had enlisted as a Private on 1st Sept 1914) He then had an operation for its removal at Curragh Military Hospital, but the operation did not give any releif.  He continued to have trouble with it when in France. When he came home on ordinary leave he consulted a specialist who advised a further operation. This was performed successfully on 19 April 1916. (outwards) The dislocation was reduced without an anesthetic; Xray shows no abnormal mobility.
